Public: Don't Mess With My Flight Plans

Sun, 13 Aug 2006 11:58:25 PDT
"Pretty soon we'll have to fly naked!" The mass media rapidly embraced the UK terror storyline fed to them. The BBC, CNN, CBC Newsworld and other all-news broadcasters covered scarcely anything but the narrowly averted catastrophe throughout the day. Funny thing, but the general public wasn't buying it. The reaction was surprisingly cynical...

The future EU

Sun, 25 May 2008 02:03:52 PDT
I am indebted to Brendano, who, as always, knows exactly where all the spin from the EU is sited, so that I have been able read about the grandiose plans that the EU has for us. I had made comments on the map published in the papers on St George’s day, Brendano says that that is all old hat and the new rubbish is on http://www.interreg3c.net/sixcms/media.php/5/EN.pdf I have been through the Inter-Regional plans and the following comments came to mind. The bureaucrats are still going ahead w

The emerging role of infection in Alzheimer?s // Medical Condition News A number of chronic diseases are in fact caused by one or more infectious agents. For example, stomach ulcers are caused by Helicobacter pylori, chronic lung disease in newborns and chronic asthma in adults are both caused by Mycoplasmas and Chlamydia pneumonia, while some other pathogens have been associated with atherosclerosis. The realization that pathogens can produce slowly progressive chronic diseases has opened new

Media Alert

Tue, 20 May 2008 06:04:46 PDT
On Friday I posted that I was going to appear on the CBC Newsworld program Politics to talk about election gag laws. Unfortunately, I got bumped at the last minute. The good news, however, is that I have been rescheduled to appear on the show today at approximately 5:10 PM EST. So I will definitely be on today --- unless I'm bumped.

Bike Polo: Palais de Tokyo

Sat, 24 May 2008 16:58:06 PDT
In Vancouver, fixed-gear bikes have achieved a cool factor that’s been compared with skateboarding culture circa ‘92 - ‘95. They’ve evolved from being the lightweight and low maintenance choice of bike couriers into a must have fashion accessory. And so have biker beanies and messenger bags as well! Unlike other cities around the world, Vancouver’s single-speed obsession is more about being seen with a fixie than actually riding one. In Paris, fixie bike culture is literally underground. Afi

The end of futurists (and ugliness)

Sun, 25 May 2008 03:03:33 PDT
I love this (only partially) tongue in cheek visualisation of the extinction timeline of a number of things we take for granted. Whether it is innocence (2001), retirement (2017) or ugliness (c.2060) Richard Watson can see it coming to an end some day. In fact he even predicts the end of futurists in c.2050 (at about the same time he thinks that we might finally wave good bye to Cher). Nb. The footnote reads "not to be taken too seriously" Found on Furl.com

“One-Man Army”

Sun, 25 May 2008 04:29:14 PDT
Finally gets his send-off. Boston Herald on the late John P. Correggio’s belated military funeral, with some ink-stained wretch’s vintage account of how he got his Silver Star in the Solomons: “One American division was toasting a new ‘one man army.’ The army was Johnny Correggio of Everett, Mass.,” gushed one news account. “Correggio, acting as a scout, had a field day with the Japs recently. Penetrating an enemy position he killed five Nips with his rifle. Then he found one who was busy
